Poker Hourly Rate: The Metric That Actually Tells You What You Earn

Poker hourly rate ($/Hour) is your total profit divided by the total number of hours played. Unlike ROI, it accounts for time - making it the only metric that lets you compare tournaments of different durations on genuinely equal terms.

Why ROI Alone Is Not Enough

ROI tells you how efficiently you convert buy-ins into profit. But it says nothing about how long that conversion takes. A 40% ROI in a 90-minute hyper-turbo and a 12% ROI in a 10-hour Sunday Major look very different as percentages. To know which is actually earning you more money per unit of time, you need hourly rate.

The formula is straightforward:

$/Hour = Total Profit / Total Hours Played

If you profit $1,200 across 40 hours of play, your hourly rate is $30/hour. Whether that came from 200 hyper-turbos or 4 deep stack majors does not matter – the hourly rate puts them on the same scale.

Two Players, Same ROI, Very Different Earnings

Player A grinds $22 hyper-turbos with a 35% ROI. Each session lasts 3 hours and covers 15 tournaments. Their expected profit per session is $22 x 15 x 0.35 = $115.50. Their hourly rate is $38.50/hour.

Player B plays $22 regular-speed MTTs with a 15% ROI. Each session lasts 7 hours and covers 6 tournaments. Their expected profit per session is $22 x 6 x 0.15 = $19.80. Their hourly rate is $2.83/hour.

Player A earns dramatically more per hour despite having a higher ROI percentage. The format, volume, and duration interaction determines actual earnings – this is why hourly rate is the correct scheduling metric when deciding which tournaments to prioritise.

What Affects Your Hourly Rate

  • Buy-in level. Higher buy-ins mean larger absolute profit from the same ROI percentage. A 10% ROI at $109 earns more per tournament than 10% ROI at $22.
  • ROI. Your skill edge expressed as percentage return. Higher ROI at the same buy-in means more profit per tournament.
  • Volume per hour. How many tournaments you can complete per hour. Turbos and hyper-turbos allow far more tournaments per session than deep stack events.
  • Tables played simultaneously. Multi-tabling increases volume but can reduce ROI if decision quality suffers. The optimal number of tables is where volume x ROI is maximised.

Improving any one of these variables improves your hourly rate. The mistake most players make is focusing exclusively on ROI improvement through strategy study while ignoring the scheduling and volume factors that can move their hourly rate just as significantly.

Hourly Rate and Session Planning

Hourly rate is the correct filter when building a session schedule. When choosing between two tournaments at the same buy-in, the one with the higher expected ROI wins. When choosing between two tournaments at different buy-ins or different durations, calculate expected $/Hour for each and prioritise accordingly.

A $55 PKO with an expected 18% ROI running for 3 hours is generating a very different hourly rate than a $55 deep stack with 10% ROI running for 8 hours – even though both are the same buy-in and both are nominally profitable. Building sessions around hourly rate optimisation rather than just ROI or prize pool size is one of the most underused edges available to online MTT players.

Common Mistakes with Poker Hourly Rate

  • Ignoring hourly rate when choosing between formats. A high ROI in a slow format does not necessarily mean you should play more of it. Calculate the hourly figure before deciding.
  • Not tracking hours accurately. Hourly rate is only useful if your hour count is accurate. Include all time at the table – not just the hours you were active in a hand.
  • Optimising volume at the expense of ROI. Adding more tables to increase hourly rate only works up to the point where your ROI holds. Past your cognitive capacity, ROI drops fast enough to reduce the net hourly figure.
  • Confusing hourly rate with consistency. A high hourly rate over 100 hours is subject to the same variance issues as short-run ROI. It becomes reliable only over hundreds of hours across a consistent format.
