Poker variance is the natural statistical fluctuation in results around your true expected win rate. In MTT poker specifically, variance is extreme - severe enough that strong, profitable players can lose money for hundreds of tournaments in a row through no fault of their own.

Why MTT Variance Is So Much Worse Than Cash Games

Variance exists in every form of poker, but MTTs experience it at a different magnitude than cash games or even sit-and-gos. The reason is structural: top-heavy prize pool distribution. In a typical MTT, the winner takes 15-25% of the entire prize pool, while a min-cash returns barely more than the buy-in. Most of your expected long-run profit comes from a small number of deep runs that occur infrequently.

This creates a result distribution that is heavily skewed. Most tournaments you play will end in a loss – you bust before the money. Occasionally you will min-cash. Rarely, you will run deep and capture a meaningful score. A player with a genuine +10% long-run ROI can realistically experience a -40% stretch over 300 tournaments, or a +80% stretch over the same sample, purely from variance. Neither outcome says anything meaningful about their actual skill level.

What Variance Actually Looks Like Over Time

If you plotted a skilled MTT grinder’s cumulative profit graph over a full year, it would not look like a smooth, steadily rising line. It would look like a jagged, volatile path with extended flat or declining stretches punctuated by sharp upward jumps from deep runs. This pattern is normal even for winning players – it is the natural shape of MTT variance, not evidence of inconsistency.

Downswings of 30, 50, even 100+ buy-ins are statistically unremarkable in large samples for players with real edges. This is precisely why bankroll management exists – the buy-in cushion is specifically sized to survive these stretches without forcing a player out of their game.

Variance Compounds With Format Choice

Different MTT formats carry meaningfully different variance profiles. Large-field deep stack tournaments have the highest variance – massive fields, top-heavy payouts, and long playing times before any meaningful result emerges. PKO and bounty formats reduce variance somewhat because bounty income is collected independently of finishing position. Hyper-turbos produce lower variance per tournament because results come faster and more frequently.

Players who understand their own variance tolerance can deliberately choose formats that match it – accepting a potentially lower ceiling on individual scores in exchange for a smoother results curve, or vice versa.

Living With Variance Without Losing Your Mind

The practical challenge of variance is psychological as much as financial. Long downswings test discipline in ways that are easy to underestimate before you experience one. Players who do not understand variance intellectually often make their worst decisions during a downswing – moving down in stakes too aggressively, abandoning sound strategies, or chasing losses with reckless shot-taking.

The antidote is process-focused evaluation: judging your play by the quality of your decisions rather than by short-term results, maintaining a properly sized bankroll specifically to absorb the swings, and tracking results over a large enough sample that variance has time to smooth out.

Common Mistakes Around Variance

  • Mistaking a downswing for a skill problem. A 200-tournament losing stretch is well within normal variance for a winning player. Overhauling your entire strategy may fix nothing and introduce new leaks.
  • Mistaking an upswing for proof of a new edge. A hot stretch can mask genuine weaknesses in your game. Stay grounded in your process even when results are strong.
  • Under-bankrolling for the variance of your chosen format. A player in large-field deep stack events needs a larger buffer than the same player in hyper-turbos.
  • Letting variance affect decision quality at the table. Tilt from recent bad variance is one of the most common ways players compound a downswing into something worse.
