GTD in Poker: What "Guaranteed" Actually Promises
GTD stands for guaranteed - the minimum prize pool an operator commits to paying out regardless of how many entries the tournament actually draws.
A Floor, Not a Forecast
When you see “$50,000 GTD” listed next to a tournament, it means the operator has committed to paying out at least $50,000 in prizes, no matter how many or how few players register. If entries fall short of what is needed to naturally generate that amount from buy-ins, the operator covers the difference out of pocket – if entries exceed it, the prize pool simply grows past the guaranteed floor.
GTD numbers are sized by operators based on historical attendance for similar events, so they are usually set close to what the tournament typically draws on its own. Occasionally, attendance falls meaningfully short – and that shortfall is exactly what creates the situation worth paying attention to.
Why GTD Matters for Tournament Selection
When entries do not cover the guarantee, the gap the operator pays is called an overlay – and it represents free additional value added directly to the prize pool, increasing the expected value of every player who registers regardless of their skill level. Watching GTD tournaments as registration closes, looking for signs that the field is tracking below what is needed to cover the guarantee, is a legitimate way to identify added-value spots in your schedule.
