Rebuy Tournaments: Topping Up Without Busting
A rebuy lets you add chips to your existing stack during a designated rebuy period, usually after dropping below your starting stack size - without having to bust and re-register first.
The Difference Between a Rebuy and a Re-Entry
A rebuy and a re-entry are easy to confuse but solve different problems. Re-entry requires you to actually bust out and register again as a new entry. A rebuy lets you stay in your seat and add chips while you are still alive – typically when your stack falls below a defined threshold, often the original starting stack size, during a fixed rebuy period early in the tournament.
Pure rebuy tournaments are less common online today than they once were, but the mechanic survives in hybrid formats – some events combine a rebuy period with re-entry, others restrict rebuys to a specific number of allowed purchases. Always check the tournament rules rather than assuming, since the exact mechanics vary by network and event.
Why the Rebuy Period Changes Early Strategy
Knowing you can top up your stack during the rebuy period changes the math on marginal early decisions. A player willing to rebuy is effectively playing with a deeper bankroll-adjusted stack than the chips in front of them suggest – they can afford to take a slightly more aggressive line knowing a busted or depleted stack is not necessarily the end of their tournament.
This is exactly why rebuy periods tend to produce looser, more action-heavy play in the opening levels compared to a straight freezeout. Once the rebuy period closes, the game typically tightens up noticeably as the safety net disappears and every chip becomes final.
